A job title that often gets thrown around in the tech industry is Chief diversity officer. While this title may seem like a good fit for someone who is passionate about diversity in the workplace, it’s not the job for everyone.
For one thing, there are not many of these positions in the first place. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were only 3,600 Chief diversity officers in 2016, and only 1,200 of them were employed full time. That’s not a lot of people to work with.
Additionally, many of the Chief diversity officers I’ve met have been more like project managers or business consultants. They are people who have a deep understanding of the business, but not necessarily a background in diversity.
This can be a challenge for Chief diversity officers who want to build a team of diversity experts. However, it’s not impossible. Here are some tips for building a diverse team that includes Chief diversity officers:
Be willing to learn
The best Chief diversity officers are the ones who are willing to learn and adapt. They are willing to grow and change, and they are willing to learn from others.
This is not a role that requires a degree in diversity, but it does require a willingness to learn.

In the Netherlands, the term Chief Diversity Officer is often used for the person in charge of diversity at a company. For example, the Chief Diversity Officer of the Royal Dutch Shell is known as the Shell Chief Diversity Officer (SCDO). The SCDO is also known as the Diversity & Inclusion Officer.
In the US, the term Chief Diversity Officer is more commonly used to describe the person in charge of diversity in a particular organization. For example, the Chief Diversity Officer of Google is known as the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO).
In the UK, the term Chief Diversity Officer is often used for the person in charge of diversity at a university. For example, the Chief Diversity Officer of the University of Oxford is known as the Oxford University Chief Diversity Officer (OUCDO).
